Mall’s first birthday a cake overload
The cakes were sliced and sold for R10 a piece. R10 000 was raised and then donated to the Matla a Bana Trust.
What would a first birthday be without a cake? Or without 78 cakes to be exact?
Cradlestone Mall celebrated their very first birthday in high fashion with events and activities for young and old. They also decided to host a Cake-It competition where hopefuls won some fantastic prize money.
Participants could choose to enter their creations in the birthday cake, wedding cake or Cradlestone Mall cake categories, which were judged by Donne Coetzer, Sanet Labuschagne (former Masterchef SA contestant), Helma Holloway and Miss SA Charity 2015 Talita Jansen van Vuuren.
The following winners were announced:
• Birthday cake: Tamryn Marr and second place Terry Pop
• Cradlestone Mall cake: Deon Swarts and second place Chelsea Murdoch
• Wedding cake: Felechia Wilson and second place Alexa van der Walt
• Public: Sanet de Sousa
• Taste: Tamryn Marr
After the winners were announced it was time to sing Happy birthday. The Salvation Army Band accompanied mall patrons and participants on the joyous occasion.
Then the cakes were sliced and sold for R10 a piece. R10 000 was raised and then donated to the Matla a Bana Trust, coinciding with the start of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.
A macaroon demonstration, which was part of the celebrations, was given at Showroom Cafe.
The news had the opportunity to meet pastry chef Nicolas van der Walt together with Lee-Ann Burri who presented an informal demonstration of how to make these delicate sweet treats that are gaining popularity among Krugersdorp coffee connoisseurs – slowly but surely.
