The problem of the mysterious leak at the Munsieville water reservoir could finally be resolved.
In December last year, a Rant-en-Dal resident came across what he thought to be a serious water leakage that the municipality might not have even known about at the Munsieville Reservoir.
A row of bulrushes grew in the veld where the resident, Mike Monthé, saw water flowing between the plants. Clear, fresh water filled the manhole to full capacity which was situated next to the reservoir.
The News reported on 4 February that according to Amanda de Lange, the Leader of the Freedom Front Plus in the West Rand region, workers from the municipality has looked into the possible major leak at the reservoir.
A few months later, the manhole was still filled with water.
Mogale City Local Municipality Mayor Koketso Calvin Seerane said in his State of the City Address that substantial investments have been made in the effort to reduce unaccounted for water.
“To extend the life of our strategic water assets, Kenmare Reservoir was resealed at a cost of R12 million. We successfully completed pipeline replacement projects in Kagiso Extension 8, Krugersdorp West and Rietvallei while the Munsieville project is still underway. The municipality will also upgrade the Munsieville Reservoir and Pump Station,” he said.
It is not yet clear if the leak is related to the resealing of the reservoir.
De Lange said that the Mayor did not address the massive water losses in Mogale City in his address.
“He only referred to the R12 million it cost to reseal the Kenmare reservoir. Tax payers have no idea how serious and vast the water losses problem in Mogale City really is. Costing us a fortune every month and millions every year,” she said.
The News has, since the initial report on 14 January, not received any comment regarding the mysterious leak from municipality spokesperson, Nkosana Zali.
