Everyday officials from the Mogale City Traffic Department drive around Krugersdorp and remove illegal posters, signs, adverts and notices which have been put up by desperate work seekers, businesses and even estate agents.
This is costing the department a lot of extra money and is also wasting valuable time.
According to the department’s spokesperson, Papi Motaung, officers remove a minimum of 150 illegally erected adverts everyday.
“Every time we remove these posters, they just put it back the same day.”
Under the National Road Traffic Act it clearly states that it is illegal to post adverts, posters and notices on any traffic signs whether it be a stop sign, a crossing sign or even a heel sign.
The same goes for a traffic light.
“The law clearly states that it is an illegal act to put up adverts or posters on road signs as it is illegal to obscure the road traffic sign. Anyone found to have a poster or advert on a traffic sign will be charged, summonsed or even arrested,” Motaung warned.
The time and effort spent on removing these illegal signs could much better be utilised by having more officers on the road to ensure drivers adhere to the rules and make the roads a safer place for all.
