Taxi-drivers hand over list of demands

Mogale City responds to the memorandum delivered to the municipality by a group of taxi-drivers.

Last week Wednesday, taxi-drivers belonging to the Greater Krugersdorp Taxi Association took over the streets of Krugersdorp to deliver a memorandum containing a set of their demands to the municipality.

In their memorandum, they requested that local government address the issues of growing taxi violence and route disputes in Kagiso.

The incidents that occurred during May include the deaths of a taxi-driver and an innocent bystander, a vehicle being torched, and two other people sustaining injuries.

The taxi-drivers demand an investigation into the registration of routes and the closure of illegal taxi ranks in the area.

Nkosana Zali, spokesperson for Mogale City Local Municipality said in a press statement that the municipality is equally concerned about the spates of violence and the loss of life that always accompany disagreements between taxi operators.

“We would like to see improved and safe transportation for our people in a situation where they are spoiled for choice with all the forms of public transport at their service. Taxis play a vital role in this regard.

“Mogale City will be working very closely with the provincial government (whose mandate it is to regulate taxi routes) and the associations in order to find mutually beneficial solutions to the current challenges. We will keep the public abreast as matters unfold throughout,” Zali said.
