The West Rand District Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Mpho Nawa, has unveiled a wall of excellence in honour of tourism’s high achievers in the West Rand.
The unveiling took place at Silverstar during the 9th West Rand Tourism Awards. The names of six business owners were placed on the inaugural wall of excellence.

”We are aware of the need for media coverage for our winners. Once people win they appreciate the trophies and recognition but they need marketing. We created a wall of fame so that people who have won awards for three consecutive years can get media coverage for their business,” said programme director Zeblon Mphaphuli.
One of the keynote speakers, Mpho Mache from Tshuku Transport Services, urged emerging tour operators to enter the industry because of passion rather than for the money. Gilbert Hickman from Riverstone Lodge gave advice on mentorship, and emphasised that there are no short cuts in the tourism industry.

“The West Rand District Municipality has moved from giving awards to building a wall of appreciation. We are all ambassadors of the West Rand and we have a responsibility towards it. We call upon ourselves to go the extra mile to bring about change on the West Rand,” said Nawa.
