Pensioners finally receive their rebate

After almost four years of council meetings and fighting for a property tax rebate, the municipal Property Rates Policy has finally been amended.

Lynn Pannall, a local DA ward councillor in the area, and Amanda Venter, manager of Panorama Estate in Rangeview, have been working for years to help ease the financial burden on the elderly residents.

“Just because they own their houses does not mean that their expenses are completely covered. Their medical expenses can be quiet expensive,” Lynn said.

Amanda added to this, saying that she recently received a rebate application form from a couple receiving R2 300 a month.

In order to qualify for the rebate, residents need to be over 60 years old, or have a mental or physical disability. The resident needs to be the owner of the residential property and the combined monthly income of the household must not exceed R8 000 per month.

Residents that meet the above-mentioned criteria qualify for a 40 per cent rebate on their property taxes.

The 2016 applications closed on Wednesday 29 June, but residents can apply for a rebate for the next year.
