The Robert Broom Drive project is set to begin shortly, with the first phase consisting of the widening of the road from a single lane to a double lane.
This phase will begin just before the Robert Broom Drive and Van Oordt Street intersection, with the second and third phases concluding the widening of the road.
Local ward councillor Lynn Pannall, who has driven the project since becoming a councillor for the Democratic Alliance in 2006, told the News, “Unfortunately the Council’s Capital Budget is very limited and the project has been set aside many times because of a lack of funds. I have been most unpopular in Council at times, like a bulldog that won’t let go, but determination has finally paid off.”
She added that she’d lobbied for the project for ten years, during which time the peak-hour congestion has worsened to the point where people now refer to the road as another Road from Hell.
The final objective of the project is to improve traffic-flow along the whole of Robert Broom Drive, up to the Roodepoort boundary.
The construction will take place Mondays to Fridays from 7am to 5pm, Saturdays from 7am to 1pm, and Sundays from 7am to 5pm, and is scheduled to be completed by 30 September.
