Situation at hospital back to normal

Situation at Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital has returned to normal.

Nurses and doctors at the Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital allegedly went on a go-slow recently.

The News reported on this after receiving tip-offs from community members about their experiences at the hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, doctors and nurses had not reported for duty since Wednesday, 13 July, and nurses were turning away patients who had spent hours in a queue.

One eyewitness, Monica Daka, said she took her 62-year-old mother to the hospital on Wednesday and was forced to return on the following day because they did not get assisted.

“The nurses would not let us in. They said they were tired of attending to patients because doctors were not available. Yesterday, only two doctors showed up,” she told the News.

The News spoke to a spokesperson from the Department of Health, Steve Mabona, but he would not confirm whether the staff were striking.

“The hospital had two doctors on duty on Tuesday at the Outpatient Department instead of six. This was due to four doctors being booked off. To address this problem, hospital management seconded a number of doctors from the wards to the Outpatient Department,” he told the News.

He went on to assure the News that the situation at the hospital had returned to normal.
