A dumping site at the corner of Shaka Drive and Sir Seretse Kgama Street in Kagiso has finally been cleaned up – after seven years.
This comes after residents complained repeatedly about the dumping site which created health problems for them.
Patricia Rasego, whose house is opposite the heap of rubbish, said that she had done everything in her power to get the dump removed, but to no avail.
“We complained to the local Ward 13 councilor, who asked us to write a letter. We did so, but nothing was done. We then went to the office of the Speaker several times and they agreed to remove the rubbish – but they did nothing. We are tired of complaining about this,” she told the News.
The News then spoke to the councillor for the ward, Johannes Mpanza, who claimed to know nothing about the dumping site. However, the Community Liaison Officer, Gilbert Gaselebelwe, promised to fix the problem.
“The councillor’s office has been trying to get a skip and wire to demarcate the dump site, and I have also arranged for warning boards to be placed there so that people know that dumping in that area is illegal,” Gilbert said.
He also informed the News of another area that had been cleaned up, and said there are plans to pave unused passages to prevent people from dumping in those areas. He encouraged the community to take down the number on the bin when a person is dumping and report that person to the councillor’s office so they can catch the culprits.
“I am happy that this space has been cleaned up, and I look forward to it being demarcated so that we do not have this problem again,” said Patricia.
