Joburg SPCA can no longer service Krugersdorp

Local animal welfares and organisations will have to step in to serve Krugersdorp.

The Johannesburg SPCA has announced that it will no longer be financially able to continue servicing the Krugersdorp area, with effect from 1 March 2017.

“This decision was definitely not taken lightly and followed numerous evaluations of sustainable alternatives, however the current and projected economic situation of the Johannesburg SPCA had to be taken into account,” the statement read.

Since 2009, the Johannesburg SPCA has taken full responsibility for the facility in Krugersdorp, financially as well as operationally, when no one else could. In 2015, a decision was made to centralise the operations by closing the Krugersdorp premises and operating from the Johannesburg SPCA premises in Booysens.

“We would like to assure you that the animals of Krugersdorp will not be forgotten. An alternative for people wishing to surrender animals to the SPCA would be the neighbouring SPCAs in Randburg and Roodepoort.”

Stray animals that require emergency assistance or rescue will be responded to by local animal welfares and organisations in the Krugersdorp area and surrounds, including the Johannesburg SPCA.

“SPCAs are community-driven organisations. Over and above their dependence on local residents for financial support (as no government funding is received), each SPCA relies on its community for involvement to enable sustainability. Sadly, under the current economic environment, all animal welfare organisations have been severely impacted.”
