Hospice offers diverse services on the West Rand
The West Rand community is invited to visit the Old Oak Hospice to see what they do.
The Old Oak Hospice has already been open to the West Rand community for six months. It has taken many months of hard work, planning, and use of reliable resources and businesses who share their passion to get where they are today.
At the moment, their In-patient Unit (IPU) is being rebuilt from the ground up, with various stakeholders involved. The Hospice’s staff, their registered Sisters and care-workers are so grateful and appreciate the work done by the teams. Their IPU will soon be able to accommodate patients who need 24-hour care.
“Our services include palliative care for those with life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, motor neuron disease and other debilitating illnesses,” said Hospice Director, Ina Meiring.
They also offer home-based care done by caregivers who are supervised by their registered palliative care Sister, emotional and spiritual support for those who ask for it, and pre-/ post-bereavement counselling for the patients and their families.

“Other services we provide include complementary therapies, self-awareness courses, healing your life workshops, community-based projects focusing on young children and teens, parent and child workshops, empowering your life workshops for men, and so forth.”
To further their services and to help fund-raising, the old Hospice shop on the corner of Kobie Krige and Ockerse Streets was given to them in January and they are pleased it is doing well.
“The support given to the shop comes by word of mouth – our regular customers support our shop, which is called Mpho Ya Modimo (God’s Gift) and tell the community about it. Unfortunately we also have to mention that a certain group of people continues to spread malicious rumours about us. According to them, there is no Hospice on the West Rand and they are referring patients in our community to other Hospices. Please be assured this is not true.”
The West Rand community is invited to visit the Old Oak Hospice, which is located at 051 Burger Street, Krugersdorp, or to contact them on 011 953 4863.
