Teachers honoured during Child Protection Week

As a token of appreciation the school's choir sang songs of joy and thankfulness and the learners cheered as their teachers made their presence known.

As part of Child Protection Week, which ended on 5 June, the learners at Magaliesburg Secondary School celebrated their teachers with the help of the Teddy Bear Clinic (TBC) on Tuesday, 23 May.

The Thank a Teacher project ensured teachers from various schools could wear their gowns and sashes while marching into the stadium to ecstatic cheering from their learners on the day.

The group of social workers who made the day possible: Patrick Zulu, Mashudu Nemsusunda, Sarah Moshoete and Tshemani Hlavangwani.

The TBC believes that teachers are parents’ eyes and ears during the long hours of the day when they are at work. Teachers see how their learners behave, and how they interact, and notice when something is wrong. Their learners confide in them and tell them when something is not right at home. The TBC gets some of its child abuse reports from teachers, and these reports often lead to in-depth investigations into these homes, where they often discover sexual abuse or assault.

The event was also aimed at opening the learners’ eyes to the important duty teachers have.

The teachers, all dressed in their gowns and sashes walked down the pavilion stairs in front of their cheering learners.

Members of the Psycho-social Support Programme of Gauteng also addressed the learners and talked about sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs), sexual violence and other challenges they might face in the future.

As a token of appreciation, the school’s choir sang songs of joy and thankfulness and the learners cheered as the teachers made their presence known.

The teachers in their gowns and sashes stood in front of the learners while they cheered.

Each wearing a differently coloured sash, the teachers stood in full view of the pupils who honoured them so beautifully.

“The TBC wants to thank each and every teacher for their undying devotion towards their learners and the huge role they play in their lives while their parents are at work,” said Sarah Moshoete, a member of TBC.
