2017 Recap- The stories that shook Krugersdorp [Part 2- July to October]
It has been a year of natural disasters and inhumane acts; a year of civil war and terror. Here are some of the biggest and most terrible local stories of the year.
Krugersdorp saw some of the most terrifying acts committed by both humans and nature in 2017 – from a tornado, to a string of farm murders and abandoned babies. Before recapping the years’ worst stories, the News would like to remind readers that we will post another article about the good news articles we did too, so keep an eye on our webpage for more information.

July: Two Hoërskool Monument learners died after a gas bottle leaked in the tent they were sleeping in while camping. Raymond Olivier and Cornel Bekker, two Matric learners, went on a fishing trip about 15km outside Krugersdorp. They left a gas heater burning while they were asleep. Their bodies were discovered by a camping site security guard after he heard a boiling sound coming from the tent.

August: A massive fist fight broke out at the Mogale City Local Municipality after furious members of the public destroyed most of the entrances to the municipal building during the council meeting. EFF supporters demanded that the six EFF councillors who voted against the former mayor during a vote of no confidence should move out of the coalition block and sit with the ANC. Most of the windows of the municipal buildings were broken.

September: A young biker lost his life on Spring Day on Robert Broom Drive while driving to work. His death caused great sadness in the community, because he was a well-known employee at the Valley View Shopping Centre.

October: Krugersdorp, Sterkfontein, Tarlton and parts of Muldersdrift were ravaged by a tornado. Two schools (Protearif Laerskool and Muldersdrif Laerskool) were severely damaged, Cradlestone Mall suffered extensive damage and many residents lost their homes because of the storm. However, the storm brought the community closer together, because as soon as it ended, donations for victims came flooding in. Jacaranda 942’s Good Morning Angels held a fund-raising drive at Laerskool Protearif to raise funds to rebuild both schools.
