Illegal miner steals police pistol from officer during arrest

A female officer who tried to prevent him from taking the pistol was shot.

Police arrested a man and opened a case of attempted murder against him after he took a police pistol from an officer and shot another officer who tried to intervene.

The crime prevention team were conducting their routine activities in Tudor Shaft on Saturday, 20 January at 10.10pm when they stumbled upon 41 illegal miners. The police officers arrested them.

“During the arrests, one of the suspects tried to relieve a police official of his service firearm,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police station. “His female colleague intervened to assist, but a shot unfortunately went off during the struggle with the suspect.

The colleague sustained a wound to her upper leg and was rushed to hospital. She is now in a stable condition.”

The suspect was later arrested and detained at Kagiso Police Station where a case docket of attempted murder was opened against him. He has appeared briefly in court, where the case was remanded for further investigation.
