Photos of Luipaard Street after drug riots shows ongoing devastation

A local ward councillor is still shocked at the state of the area, even after so many promises were made.

Democratic Alliance councillor for Ward 37 in Krugersdorp, Christo Kotzé, recently said that since a drug riot took place in the Wentworth Park area at the end of January, things have deteriorated tremendously.

“The photos I have taken tell you part of the sad story of what’s going on on Luipaard, Sivewright, York and plenty of other streets,” said Kotzé.

Kotzé said he was still in shock, because he has to revisit the same sight day after day.

“It breaks my heart to see the devastation on our people’s faces. The foreigners don’t care, and exploit the situation by selling drugs, escalating prostitution, and inhabiting broken down houses irrespective of big rats – big like rabbits. Do I exaggerate? Not at all. Pictures tell many stories.”

Kotzé feels Mogale City Local Municipality has not done enough to clean up the streets after the riots and the area has been worse off ever since. “Must I, as their ward councillor give up or give in? Never in a million years. What goes through the minds of our young ones?

They can only cry, one can see in their eyes they are afraid and maybe the fairy-tale is and will always be just a dream – dreams are, after all, good friends.”
