False information led to January drug riots

The woman who claimed she was kidnapped, lied to police and was allegedly with her boyfriend before opening a case.

The woman whose alleged kidnapping sparked the Krugersdorp drug riots in January, has been arrested for perjury after police discovered she had only visited her boyfriend without letting anyone know.

She was charged with perjury on Friday, 23 March by Krugersdorp Police detectives who, after extensive investigation, found that she had given false information to the police.

She further alleged that she was dropped off, and not kidnapped, in the Kagiso area and was brought to the Kagiso Police Station for safety.

The woman will appear in court on 11 April.

Sergeant Tshepiso Mashele, spokesperson for the Krugersdorp Police, said the police force wants to emphasise once again that if a false statement is made under oath, there are repercussions.
