Men arrested for attacking police

The situation worsened when the intruders ran to their vehicles and returned with pangas, knobkerries and a knife.

Three suspects aged between 26 and 27, believed to be taxi drivers, were arrested and detained at the Kagiso Police Station after attacking police members.

According to Captain Solomon Sibiya, Kagiso Police spokesperson, two men and a woman made their way into the police station to seek safety on Monday, 24 September at about 11.30pm.

A few minutes later three unknown, intoxicated men rushed into the station. It is believed they wanted to attack the other three people.

“When members at the front desk tried to stop them, they became aggressive and started to insult and threaten the police members. During an argument with the police, the suspects jumped over the counter,” Sibiya explained.

“One of the suspects slapped a female police officer through the face. The situation worsened when the intruders ran to their vehicles and returned with pangas, knobkerries and a knife.”

The members called for backup and soon managed to put the suspects under arrest. They were subsequently detained at the police station where a case docket of assault on police, malicious injury to property, obstructing police in performing their duties, possession of dangerous weapon and crimen injuria were opened.

The suspects appeared briefly in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 26 September and were remanded in custody for further investigation and a bail application.

“Undermining and attacking police officials will not be tolerated,” Colonel Peter Mabuso, acting station commander of Kagiso Police concluded.
