Local police officer upholds moral code

Bribery is a serious offence because it undermines the efforts, integrity, objectives, mission, vision and image of the police.

A Kagiso police officer recently proved his loyalty when a foreign national spaza shop-owner tried to bribe him.

During a joint operation between Mogale City Local Municipality Environmental and Health inspectors and the Kagiso Police on 26 September, members of the operation stopped at a spaza shop.

One of the police officers introduced himself and requested the owner’s passport or asylum documents. The man could however not produce any documents and instead offered the officer R600 as a bribe.

This lead to the shop-owner being arrested and detained at the Kagiso Police Station. A further charge of bribery has been added.

The man made a brief court appearance on 28 September and was remanded in custody, to be transferred to a repatriation centre.

“Bribery is a serious offence because it undermines the efforts, integrity, objectives, mission, vision and image of the police,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police.
