Case of fifty-one-year old rapist withdrawn

Rape is regarded as one of the crimes that take away the dignity of another person.

A 51-year-old man was arrested on 29 September for the rape of a 38-year-old woman at the Smoke Down informal settlement.

According to the woman she was still asleep at 7am when the incident occurred. The suspect was arrested and made a brief appearance in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court.
The woman has however withdrawn the case.

“One of our core function as police is to ensure that we bring offenders to justice and investigate all crimes that threaten the safety and security of any community, including women and children,” said Constable Lucky Matome, the Tarlton Police spokesperson.

Rape is regarded as one of the crimes that takes away the dignity of another person, said Matome.

He added that it is unfortunate that some victims take such cases very lightly and as a result they opt to withdraw the cases at court, regardless of the seriousness of the offence, and the hard work of the police in ensuring that perpetrators of such offences are brought to justice.

“In cases where victims withdraw such cases, it sends a wrong message to the perpetrators and the community at large, that one can commit an offence and get away with it,” he said.
