The men allegedly jumped over the fence and entered their home through an open door.

According to the man’s granddaughter, her grandmother had just finished baking banana bread and went to the bedroom to fetch something when her husband alerted her that there were intruders in the house.

“My grandfather was reading the newspaper in the living room and when he looked up he saw the three men,” said the granddaughter.

“He yelled to my grandmother, ‘there are three men in the house’.”

One of the men allegedly entered the bedroom where the woman was and two stayed behind with the man. The last of the four stayed in the get-away car outside.

Her grandmother wanted to hide but it was too late as one of the attackers was already with her. She asked the man to please not hurt them.

In the living room, one of the attackers picked up a coffee table and threw it at the elderly man, they then started hitting him with a crowbar.

“My grandfather stood up and started fighting back,” she said.

Allegedly, when the one suspect saw the man fighting back, he pointed a firearm at the victim, grabbed the TV and ran outside. The other suspect was still on the floor when the man went to his wife in the bedroom.

The third perpetrator had apparently taken a bread knife from the kitchen when he came in and had ordered the woman to lie on the ground while he held the knife to her back.

According to the granddaughter, when her grandfather came in and saw his wife on the ground, he saw the panic button and pressed it.

The security company first tried to phone the woman but could not get through as the intruders had already taken her cellphone. They then phoned the second number on the list, their daughter who works in Sandton. She asked the security company to please take a look and then phoned her mother and father on the house phone.

“My grandfather always carries the house phone in his pocket and when it started ringing, he answered but didn’t say anything. My aunt could however hear the struggle going on in the bedroom and phoned the security company and asked them to send more cars,” she said.

The third suspect eventually left after realising the security company would be there any moment. The victim ran after the perpetrator, and this is when he saw that they were driving a blue Toyota Camry.

The man sustained a lot of cuts and bruises and a broken rib, although his wife was unharmed.

The perpetrators got away with a TV and a cellphone.
