Man caught hiding in cave after being chased
A man was caught hiding in a cave after he and another man were spotted trespassing.
A family from Oaktree had a close call when two intruders were spotted on their property on 3 November.
The owner, his daughter and his son each live in their own house on the same property.
At about 9pm on Saturday night the owner’s daughter was looking out her window when she saw two men at her brother’s house.

Suspicious of the strange men she phoned her father and asked if he knew where her brother was, to which her father said that he was having dinner with them. She told her father about the men she had seen.
The owner, his son and his son-in-law allegedly went to check on the house and surprised the men, who then fled. A chase ensued.
There were signs that the men had entered the property by lifting the electric fencing with sticks and crawling underneath. They allegedly left the property the same way and headed for some trees and a cave on another property.
The three men phoned Conserve Security’s Anti Farm Attack (AFA) unit when they got to the cave.
The AFA unit arrived and entered the cave to start searching for the suspects. About 50 metres down they found one man hiding in a small opening in the cave. The suspect was taken to the surface and arrested by police.
The next morning when the Conserve team searched the cave and surrounding areas, they found clothing in the cave as well as on the property where the men were first spotted. The other suspect allegedly got away and is still on the loose.
The News has requested feedback from the police and is awaiting their response.
Trevor Roberts from Conserve Security said owners of property on which there is a cave can take certain steps to make the property more secure:
• Check it regularly. Keep an eye out for signs that someone has been there. Look for any tracks, leftover food, cigarette butts, signs that a fire was made or that candles were burnt in and around the cave.
• Take note of the direction towards which your dogs bark. If they continually bark in the direction of the cave it could mean that someone is there.
• If at all possible close off the entrance to the cave with a fence. There are laws relating to caves, especially in the Cradle of Humankind, but close off the cave entrances if at all possible. This could also ensure that animals and children do not accidentally wander in and get lost or hurt.
