A 53-year-old man was arrested in Hekpoort recently after he was found in the illegal possession of two rifles and ammunition.
Hekpoort Police spokesperson Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye said there are still members of the public who defy the call to surrender unwanted firearms and ammunition because they fear prosecution.
She explained that Sergeant Ndateni Phosa from the Hekpoort Police received information about a man who was going around pointing a firearm at members of the community.
Sergeant Phosa followed up on the information which led to Panorama around Hekpoort where the 53-year-old man was found.
The man failed to produce a licence and he was placed under arrest for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.”
Sergeant Maswanganye said the ignorance of not adhering to the call to surrender firearms contravenes section 3 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.
Hekpoort Police station commander Captain Tebogo Kgomo applauded Sergeant Phosa for his hard work.
She also appealed to the community to continue working with the police to reduce crime. The Hekpoort Police can be contacted on 014 576 9100. Alternatively, make use of the Crime Stop Nnumber on 08600 10111.
