Couple in dire straits: ‘They need to be in a care facility’ – good samaritan
Rotten food was found all over the flatlet.
Cindy Maree and her staff are habitual good Samaritans.
Cindy is the director of a company that does fire safety awareness at schools but when she and her staff have some free time they get involved wherever there is a need they could meet.
Recently three elderly residents at the municipal flats on Wagen Street told her that a couple in one of the units were struggling to take care of themselves and that their flatlet needed urgent cleaning. Cindy sent out an invitation to her staff who, due to it being school holidays, are not working. They immediately heeded her call to action. The ages of all Cindy’s staff vary between in their 20s and early 30s.
On Monday June 27, Cindy and seven of the young adult employees tackled the unit at the Pioneer block of flats. Bird seed were all over the floors, dishes were stacked high, food was rotting in the fridge and freezer, and there was rotten food even on the beds.

But Cindy soon realised the reasons for the dire state of the flat extended far beyond a lack of hygiene. “During a conversation with the lovely couple it became clear that there were mental challenges and that they needed to be in a care facility,” said Cindy.
“I approached a private care facility that takes in grace cases but they were full. I am not asking for donations or money. I am appealing to the public, private or state care facilities to please help to find a place where they will be taken care of. I am willing to coordinate all efforts,” pleaded Cindy.
