Feeding 12 000 mouths for Mandela Day
A group of volunteers recently took on the mammoth task of making 12 000 peanut butter and jam sandwiches for Mandela Day. And they did it!
A typing error recently led to one of the most ambitious Mandela Day events in a while. Sure enough with plenty of hands, heaps of support and lots of determination the Belly to Brain organisation could deliver 12 000 sandwiches to organisations that feed the hungry.
Dominique Tibbles who is at the head of the organisation explained that while registering the event she accidentally typed in that they would make 12 000 sandwiches instead of 1 200. When she tried to correct it she was asked if she was not up to the challenge. And Dominique is not one to stand back from a challenge so she took it on.

On Friday, July 16 the team gathered at Doppio Zero and was supported by volunteers from BNI, Unveiled church, Honeyfield Charity, Cradle of Hope and the Krugersdorp community to take on the mammoth task.

The sandwiches were then distributed to the Cradle of Hope, all three the Wings of Hope houses, Honeyfield Charity, Grace House and the Zandspruit community.
BNI Bizz Masters started the sandwich initiative about six years ago and this year their goal was to make and distribute 100 000. They partnered with Belly to Brain to help and achieve their goal.
The team started at 07:00 and used 1 500 loaves of bread. Nature’s Dream donated 200 loaves and sold the remaining 1 300 to Belly to Brain at a reduced price. Doppio Zero graciously donated their venue, and the peanut butter and jam were sponsored by an NPO which is made up out of 200 men who call themselves Näs há gente camo a gente.

The teams used 148kg of peanut butter and 240kg of jam.
Dominique, a former Mrs Krugersdorp Curve was also joined by Miss Westrand Ahsley van den Berg and Mrs Krugersdorp Jenny-Lee Swanepoel. If you would like to get involved with Belly to Brain, reach out to them on social media at Belly2brain Npc PBO.
The News is very pleased to report that they did in fact reach their goal and made 12 000 sandwiches.
