New shooting club hosts training day
Club aims to benefit the community on multiple levels.
On Saturday, July 23, the recently founded Muldersdrift Social Shooting Club (MSSC) hosted a shooting and training day at Black Duck Field Sports Outdoor Shooting and Archery Range in Muldersdrift.
The aim of the day was to hone the self-protection skills of club members as well as members of the general public.
According to the club’s chairperson, Leon Malan, the club was registered as a non-profit organisation last November. He said the club not only wished to train those interested in the fine art of self-defence but also to serve as a social platform. Club secretary Russett Margo concurred.
“First and foremost we want to train community members to protect themselves in critical situations, but we also want them to get to know their neighbours in a more social setting,” said Margo.
“The club is about more than just shooting. We also give 4×4, archery and tactical training. Anyone is welcome and need not be a member of the club,” explained Margo.

Also in attendance on the day was AfriForum’s Roodepoort branch members. The branch’s deputy chairperson and neighbourhood watch leader, Werner Brits, said the civil rights organisation was there to show support for the initiative.
“In Muldersdrift we have a huge problem with crime, especially transformer and cable theft. Crime also tends to be violent and it is therefore important that residents know how to protect themselves sensibly,” said Brits. “AfriForum’s neighbourhood watch has had many successes and foiled numerous crimes in the area. We are here to give the community support but we also need their support. Our aim is to have a society where children can play freely and safely in the streets of their neighbourhoods again,” said Brits.
