Festive season blues: The hidden struggle of holiday depression
While the holidays bring joy to many, they can also be a time of loneliness, stress, and sadness for others – don’t ignore the signs of seasonal depression.

For most, the festive season is an eagerly awaited and joyous time. For many, it is however a time of loneliness and depression.
According to The South African Depression and Anxiety Group, suicide rates increase over the festive season. The season comes with the expectations that everyone should be happy, carefree, and spend time with loved ones, but for many, balancing these expectations causes increased stress.
Additionally, the holiday season can cause depression for various reasons such as financial constraints, unemployment, not being able to spend time with loved ones and coping with the loss of a loved one.
You may be suffering from seasonal depression if:
• Find effortless activities, such as getting out of bed, making dinner or walking, more difficult than usual
• Feeling more tired than usually
• Losing interest in things that always brought you joy
• Having trouble concentrating
If these feelings continue after the holiday season is over, you may be suffering from more than just seasonal depression. Speaking to someone can help determine the cause of your feelings.
If you are concerned about your own, or a loved one’s mental health do not hesitate to reach out for help. For more information about where to find help, visit https://bit.ly/4a7F3Ky.
