Don’t fall for these fake jobs, payments and credit scams in Mogale
Mogale City Local Municipality has alerted residents to several scams targeting locals, including fake job offers, payment requests and credit control threats. Officials urge residents to stay vigilant.
Residents beware; numerous municipal scams are currently circulating in the area.
Mogale City Local Municipality’s (MCLM) communications officer, Refilwe Mahlangu, highlighted some of the scams currently going around:
Payment scams:
Mahlangu said that upfront fees or banking details will never be requested by the municipality.
“Payments are only accepted at municipal pay points or via EFT, and MCLM is listed as a public beneficiary at all major banks. No official is allowed to demand payments via phone or WhatsApp,” she explained.
Recruitment scams:
There are no fees for job applications, interviews or credit checks. Mahlangu added that jobs are only advertised on the municipality’s official channels, including their website (www.mogalecity.gov.za).
Credit control scams:
Mahlangu explained that due process must be followed before officials can disconnect services.
“Any credit control action will be preceded by a seven-day written notice bearing the Mogale City logo, delivered to your property. Never pay any amount to an individual to avoid a disconnection threat,” she warned.
Advertisement scams:
Only municipal platforms or specific newspapers advertise tenders, quotations and jobs. She added that RDP houses are not for sale and are provided at no cost by the provincial government.
“The process cannot be bypassed by any municipal official, contractor or service provider,” she concluded.
