Violence on TV – I agree!

Anonymous writes:

I could hardly contain my excitement when I saw the letter from anonymous recently with the headline Violence and double standards!

I have felt a strong need to write about this subject for a long time. I totally agree with the fact that in almost every second movie, soapy and even documentaries like cooking programmes actors are shown consuming alcohol! To be fair to those suffering from withdrawal symptoms, maybe all movies showing alcohol consumption should be banned?

Same with all advertisements in this regard! I do not, however, consider wine as one of those as it complements a meal – except of course when it is abused. Then the point of violence! I can only afford Open View and the violence, excessive drinking of alcohol, constant swearing, backstabbing, corruption, murder, rape, racist remarks, ‘dark’ movies – the latter especially on Sundays, blasphemy and explicit sex make one’s hair stand on end! It must give slightly sensitive viewers nightmares!

Their ‘Code of Conduct’ is a joke! Recently, I saw an extremely violent movie between 2pm and 4pm, who watches TV that time of the day apart from stay-at-home-because-no-school-kids? Maybe shift workers … or a tired housewife needing a break. None of those mentioned will relax you in any way or ‘give one a break’; a heart attack is more likely! My question is who chooses these movies, like The Island, Tears of the Moon, Wrong Turn etc. for general public viewing? And why are those responsible so extremely irresponsible!

Surely there must be a huge variety of movies that are really good, with none of the above-mentioned undesirables? I did write a letter to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) who said they do not choose the movies – that I should contact the Publicity Board. Can the News maybe take this further?

I know so many people who simply do not watch TV anymore! But then again there is always Krugersdorp News! Always a pleasure to read!
