We have all heard it said, “Nothing in life is free”. We have also heard it said, “The best things in life are free”.
Life has become so expensive. Many things have become almost unaffordable. I want to believe that there is truth in the second mantra. Many of the best things in life are free, or almost free. Among my favourite free things in life are a sunrise and a sunset.
Walking barefoot on the grass during a gentle summer shower. Something we are all, I am sure, praying for. Some things may not be free, but they cost very little. A glass of ice-cold water on a hot day, a cup of hot coffee on a cold day. Just spending precious moments with your spouse, child or an old school friend.
What’s the key to opening the doors to all these free and almost free things in life? It is hidden in a little verse in the book of Ecclesiastes. This comes from the Good News translation, Eccl. 7:29, “This is all I have learnt: God made us plain and simple, but we have made ourselves very complicated”.
If your happiness comes from things and positions, you will never be happy. The next high will always cost more. But if you enjoy the free things and the almost free, you have a far greater chance of being happy. Stop, look at the sunrise, listen to the birds and smell the flowers; then say “thank you Lord”.
