My family’s confidence in SAPS completely restored

A letter of appreciation to Brigadier Mashao, the Krugersdorp Police station commander.

Dear Brigadier

I want you to know what your officers did for us and especially what they did for my daughter and her friend on the afternoon of 4 December 2020.

While you Brigadier, were kind enough to be introduced to us and to meet us that afternoon (while we were busy with the paperwork in respect of a cellphone robbery case), your officers managed to turn a very traumatic event into an unforgettable and more favourable experience for us.

My family’s confidence in the South African Police Service (SAPS) was completely restored by the actions of your Warrant Officer De Klerk (Baksteen) and Constable Martin Nkoane.

It is not only because of the fact that they managed to recover our stolen cellphone within 24 hours, but even more because of the way they attended to us. They managed to calm two very traumatised and extremely nervous young girls and changed their perception of dealings with SAPS entirely. They made them feel safe whilst they lost a little faith in humankind, just the day before.

My daughter and her friend were walking home from a shop, when my daughter was robbed of her cellphone by two thugs on a motorcycle, just before 3pm on Thursday, 3 December.

A ‘Lookout’ was reported by Keith Aikman from the CPF. Warrant Officer De Klerk spotted a suspicious motorcycle and was informed by Constable Nkoane, that there was a ‘Lookout’ for the same motorcycle and advised that they should be apprehended, as the motorcycle and the suspects fitted the description.

After Warrant Officer De Klerk interviewed the suspects, they admitted to the robbery of my daughter’s cellphone. The cellphone was swiftly recovered by Warrant Officer De Klerk and Constable Nkoane –within an hour after the ‘Lookout’ was reported.

We have the utmost gratitude towards Warrant Officer De Klerk, Constable Nkoane and Keith Aikman (and the CPF) for the swift action and professional way they handled the situation. The kindness they showed my daughter was just amazing, and not what was expected at all. We appreciate the extra mile, also from detective Drotsky (if we have his surname right), for his patience and care.

Well done to all involved. They have restored our faith and we know that we can still count on the South African Police Service.

From a forever grateful family.
