The chicken and the pig

“Greater love has no man than this, that a man lays down his own life for his friends" John 15:3.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

Many years ago my daddy told an unforgettable story during his sermon. He told how a chicken and a pig walked through the streets of a small Freestate town. They passed by a Wimpy that had a banner, “Bacon and eggs for breakfast”. The chicken, filled with pride, said to the pig, “That special would not be possible without my contribution”. The pig’s head hung low as they walked.

Then the silence was broken when the pig finally spoke up.

“You give something of yourself, but it costs me my life to make that special possible.” Every Easter it reminds me of the central message in the Christian story.

Jesus gave his life so that we can have hope. 2 000 years later at this time Catholics and Protestants all celebrate Easter. A time when we remember the ultimate sacrifice made on our behalf.

We also remember sacrifices others made to make our lives better. Parents, grandparents, friends and, at times, total strangers. So many people have sacrificed so much for us. As you stop for a moment, why not make a quick tour of your life; remembering the people who have done so much for you.

As I do that with you, my mind is filled with people who have made me who I am.

Like Jesus, let us be willing to do more than the chicken in the story. Let us be willing to give the ultimate sacrifice of love.

“Greater love has no man than this, that a man lays down his own life for his friends” John 15:3.
