Boxing champs at large in town
Amateur boxing fans were knocked out by a special visit from West Rand boxing superstars.
The Chesa Nyama braai shop in the CBD became the rendezvous point for legendary boxing champions of the past and present to meet and greet their fans.
A fulfilled day had fans enjoying events from the Vespa Chicken Runners, an antique show, a Shine Ford Vehicle display as well as a jumping castle and fun activities for the children.
“A big thank you to McCarthy Volkswagen Constantia for sponsoring beautiful gift packs to the young amateur boxers and their polished vehicle display,” said Alta Grobler, owner of Chesa Nyama, which means informal braai.
The event was supported by the Mogale City Traffic Department that not only closed off Monument Street for the event, but also assisted in redirecting the traffic.
As guests of honour local professional champions Hekkie Budler, Johnny Muller and Ryno Liebenberg made a public appearance in support of local amateur boxing as well as Boxing Hall of Fame inductee Brian Mitchell and South Africa’s Rose of Soweto Dingaan Thobela.
Boxing fans were taken down memory lane with special appearances by boxers from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Among the big names were Bennie Knoetze, Jeff Ellis, Ron Ellis, Peet Bothma, Shorn Moorcraft and Springbok Nicky Ness who all took time out of their busy schedules to attend this special event.
Witpoortjie Vikings Amateur Boxing Club embraced the moment by honouring their young achievers. In addition Johnny and Hekkie were presented with honouree memberships and declared ambassadors of boxing by the Witpoortjie club.
Krugersdorp West, Randgate, Avante and Kagiso boxing clubs also participated in the day’s activities. Ryno also was presented with honorary membership from Krugersdorp Amateur Boxing Gym.

CEO Stelio Nathanael believes for the sport to grow, investment in amateur boxing is a necessity.
“A special thank you to Uncle Jeff Ellis from African Ring, Nick Lourens and all the boxers, trainers and members who took part in this event,” Alta said.
