Krugersdorp Chess Club officially launches with strong community support

More than just a game, the Krugersdorp Chess Club wants to connect people, build confidence, and inspire critical thinking, all while creating a stronger, more inclusive community.

Making moves on the board seems to come naturally to locals, as the Krugersdorp Chess Club (KCC) officially launched on October 4.

According to KCC chairperson Albert Nel, the turnout exceeded all expectations. The launch drew a lively mix of players and supporters – from seasoned competitors and senior veterans to enthusiastic newcomers and young learners eager to test their skills.

The West Rand Chess Association was also in attendance, showing strong support for the revival of chess in Krugersdorp and the greater West Rand.

About 30 residents attended the launch to enjoy a few rounds of friendly, non-competitive chess, with the day focused on social play and community connection.

“Although chess is a game, it transcends into our lives, teaching us new ways of thinking, making decisions, and enjoying life. It instils chivalric values we can live out every day,” Albert said.

He explained that the club’s mission goes beyond just playing chess – it’s about using the game to build character, encourage learning, and strengthen community ties.

“We believe chess is more than competition. It’s a tool for personal development, education, and social unity. Our mission is to make chess accessible to all ages and backgrounds, to develop young talent, and to position Krugersdorp as a hub of chess excellence in the West Rand,” he added.

The club has already set its sights on several upcoming activities, including social chess days, puzzle challenges, internal club championships, “play and learn” sessions, inter-club matches, and community outreach initiatives.

Regular club days will be held every Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00, and all residents are welcome to join in – it’s free to play.
