LIMPOPO – Police have launched a manhunt after a buffalo bull was allegedly poached in the Kruger National Park in Limpopo.

The incident was reported on Sunday morning (August 30), in the Tshikuyu Block of the park, within the Masisi policing area in the Vhembe District.

According to preliminary information, a complainant was conducting patrols when he noticed a vulture flying overhead. He went to investigate and allegedly found the head of a buffalo bull, pieces of its skin and five sets of human footprints, along with dog tracks.

The tracks were followed towards the park’s fence in the direction of Benndemutale village.

Buffalo valued at R300k

The buffalo is estimated to have been worth R300 000.

Case opened, no arrests yet

A case of poaching has been opened at Masisi police station. No arrests have been made and the suspects remain unknown.

Commissioner condemns incident

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers condemned the incident and called for continued efforts to combat wildlife crime.

“Wildlife crime remains a serious concern, and we will continue working with our law enforcement partners and communities to protect our wildlife resources,” said Scheepers.

He appealed to anyone with information about the incident or the suspects to assist the investigation.
