TZANEEN – Tzaneen swimmers played a starring role as Limpopo Swimming dominated the annual inter-provincial gala hosted at Stanford Lake College on August 22, helping the province secure the overall winning team title while producing a string of records and individual accolades.

Among the standout performers were several swimmers with strong Tzaneen connections, including Huibri Engelbrecht, Milan Jansen van Rensburg, Luke Breetzke, Ruan Hanaczek-Kruger and Lize de Wet, who made valuable contributions to Limpopo’s impressive showing.

Engelbrecht claims junior award

Huibri Engelbrecht was one of the highlights of the gala, claiming the Hy-Tek junior female swimmer award after an outstanding performance that included two new records.

Jansen van Rensburg also etched his name into the record books with a new record in the butterfly event, while Ruan Hanaczek-Kruger added another record to Limpopo’s tally.

Hanaczek-Kruger’s double honour

Hanaczek-Kruger had an especially successful gala, walking away with two individual awards. He was named senior Victor Ludorum as well as best senior male swimmer in the Hy-Tek awards, confirming his status as one of the province’s leading competitors.

Luke Breetzke, another Tzaneen swimmer, was described as one of Limpopo’s “trump cards” and played an important role in the province’s strong team performance.

De Wet added further local representation to a squad that dominated the competition.

A record-breaking showing

In 94 individual events, Limpopo won 49 gold, 42 silver and 46 bronze medals, while setting 15 new records.

The province also claimed 21 gold medals from 37 relay events, with 13 relay victories accompanied by new records.

Record-breakers included Sophia Potgieter, Engelbrecht, Emma-Lee Claasen, Jansen van Rensburg, Minke Erasmus, Miane Bendeman, Luhan Olivier, Hanaczek-Kruger and Lleyti Lira.

Team honours swept

Limpopo swept the major team honours, being named winning boys team, winning girls team and overall winning team. Potgieter also received the junior Victrix Ludorum award.

Sheila Grobbelaar attributed the success to the swimmers’ hard work and commitment, as well as the strength of Limpopo’s swimming programme.

“We are incredibly proud of the swimmers and what they achieved at the inter-provincial gala. The number of medals and records speaks for itself, but what makes us especially proud is seeing our swimmers supporting one another and contributing to the success of the team,” she said.
