Childhood friends passionate about cross country

Two Haenertsburg cyclists, Gert Morerwa and Toban McMahon say they have been bitten by the cross country bug and loving it.

Three years ago the pair embarked on their first long trip from Magaliesberg to Cape Town, cycling a total of 1927.27km, riding an average of 93km a day.

McMahon cycled occasionally in high school, while Morerwa never had an interest in the sport.

“I think I was the only person crazy enough to say yes when Toban asked me to join him on the trip down to the Cape, even though I didn’t own a bicycle at the time.

The last time I rode a bicycle was when I was a kid.

“In fact the bicycle I rode to the Mother City, I borrowed from a friend.

“I had no training whatsoever when we first set off on our epic adventure.

“So as you can imagine, it took some getting used to,” Morerwa explained.

The pair told Herald that the trip made them realise how big and diverse the country is.

During their trip they met wonderful people in the various places they passed, some even offered them accommodation as a kind gesture.

“The places that really stood out were the small towns in the Karoo.

We were in Kamieskroon and Garies in Namaqualand during the flower season,” Morerwa said.

Their friendship began when they were both learners at Haenertsburg Primary School.

They are in the process of preparing for their next trip in the coming month.

They will also be raising money for a worthy cause on their next trip.

“We will recommend cross country cycling to anyone.

It is an extreme amount of fun and anyone can do it, regardless of fitness levels,” they concluded.
