Mopani boxers shines at provincial tournament

Mopani district shined at the Limpopo provincial boxing championships recently with seven of eight boxers qualifying for the national championships.

The stage was set at the Malamulele community hall where boxers battled it out for spots on the national championships later this year in Cape Town. One of the boxers, Katekani Khosa who started boxing last year said he was proud of himself.“I see a lot of improvement from the time I started and now, my technique is smoother and faster.I have been training a lot with the goal that I want to be one of the best in the district and province.”

He said the past weekend was tough as he met an equally talented boxer in the bout that saw him qualify for the nationals. Speaking on his training regimen, Khosa said it was tough as he had to drop a lot of weight and make changes to his diet all the while maintaining the intensity in his training which paid off. He said he was going to go all out in preparing for the nationals to bring a championship back to the province and district.

I want to go all the way and make a professional career out of this,” said Rikhotso.

Bunch Boxing Club coach Jeffrey Ngobeni said he was happy with the achievements of the Mopani boxers this past weekend as they prepared hard for it. “We had two training camps prior to the provincial championship and it was intense. We are probably going to have three training camps as we prepare for the SA championships in Cape Town later this year.”
