HOEDSPRUIT: Spiked drinks, burgled homes – critical problem

'Spiked' drinks and burglaries are becoming a critical concern for Hoedspruit, according to Mike Scott, chairperson of Hoedspruit Farm Watch.

We are once again approaching the end of the picking season, and reports have demonstrated that this is generally accompanied by an increase in break-ins.

Scott requests that residents secure their personal property as much as possible, especially when going away on holiday or out for the weekend.

Reports have also come to light of the spiking of drinks in a number of bars and restaurants in and around Hoedspruit.

Residents are advised to always guard their drinks carefully or at least have them in the care of someone personally known and trusted when going out.

Scott would also like to thank all those who so reliably continue with their patrol duty – these are truly people who care for the safety and security of their loved ones and are prepared to do their bit for the Hoedspruit Community.

If you know you are not going to be able to do your allocated patrol duty any more, please send an sms to 083 647 7951 and request that you be removed from the duty list.

If you would like to join the patrol duty list, please send an sms to the same number and request to be added.

The Farm Watch is desperately looking for volunteers from the Klaserie/Guernsey area as well as the Gravellote/Harmony area to drive patrols there. Members will only need to patrol at least once a month.

Following joint communications between Farm Watch and Protrack in connection with Rhino poaching, the Watch has decided to set up a database of all vehicles that look suspicious and that are seen on the road at unusual times of the day or night.

Scott invites patrol members as well as residents who notice a suspicious looking vehicle, to sms the details immediately to 083 647 7951 or to Farm Watch’s number 072 310 0032.

Please include Registration No, Type of vehicle, Colour, Number of passengers, where the vehicle is standing or moving from and to.

Roads towards Acornhoek seem to be most common.

The Town Watch Team had great success on Sunday August 14, when they were able to catch a few of the “remote” thieves operating in town.

One suspect has been arrested and 4 other cases have been lodged against him, thanks to a brave staff member from Wimpy who phoned Farm Watch to give information about this person.

Farm Watch would also like to thank NTT Toyota for their R9 500.00 donation.

They will be using this money to purchase Bulletproof vests for some of the newer Reaction Unit members.
