TZANEEN: Eskom builds sub-station

The South African power utility is building a new sub station which is situated in the Nkowankowa industrial side.

Eskom started with the building of the Letaba Sub-station last year June and it is expected to be finished by October this year.

“Currently we are buying electricity from the municipality. After the sub-station is finished we will provide our customers with our own electricity and it means we will connect with more consumers than in the past,” said Freedom Mthetwa, Program Manager.

Mthetwa added that they are also hoping to be finished with the extra projects in December this year. The construction of the sub-station has also created jobs for the local people, as all of the construction workers come from around the area.

“The Letaba sub-station will help to reduce power interruptions and we will have a reliable supply of electricity to our customers,” said Nicholas Maluleke, Project Coordinator.

Attie Du Plooy, Site Manager, said that the only challenge so far was the heavy rainfalls which took place a few months back and that they lost time as they had to wait for the water to dry up.

The project also received positive results from the two environmental audits which tries to see if Eskom complies with the environmental standards. Maria Rampjapedi, Eskom Environmental Officer also added that she is pleased with the way things are going.
