Taxi violence flares up in Kgapane

A car was burned down, suspects arrested and shops looted after a protest by maxi taxi drivers turned violent in Ga-Kgapane on Monday.
The township came to a standstill when taxi drivers burned tyres and blockaded roads leading in and out of the area.
Vendor stalls were vandalised and shops closed down following the unrest.
According to community members, eight suspects were arrested and later released.
It is alleged that the Bolobedu United Taxi Association (BUTA) and maxi taxi drivers are at loggerheads over commuters using certain routes. According to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, the situation is now under control.
