TZANEEN: School founder honoured

Loretto was founded in 1947 by Van Reenen's father, Captain Frank Edwards, with just one teacher.

Loretto Combined School unveiled a wall plaque in honour of the school’s founder, Lillian Van Reenen in Tzaneen on Monday, December 4.

Van Reenen and her mother Cicil took over the school in 1951 when her father passed away.

The school which is situated 2km outside Tzaneen currently boasts 202 learners.

In 1955 when Van Reenen’s got married to Archie they both took over the school until 1994 when it was handed over to the government.

Van Reenen could not hold back her tears when she unveiled the wall plaque.

“My parents were happy to have opened the school and to have contributed education to the children of Tzaneen,” said Van Reenen.

The school also honoured best performing learners by giving them certificates for the current year.

Parents of the learners came in big numbers to grace the event, the Department of Health also came and taught parents about different kinds of diseases and Tzaneen Circuit Manager, Felix Nomvela honoured the occasion.
