IEC barcodes stamps no longer required to vote

Rumours that you will not be allowed to vote are untrue.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa no longer stamps the Identity Document when a person is registering to qualify to vote in the election.

This follows after reports that people who do not have IEC barcodes stamps in their identity documents will not be allowed to vote in the elections

“It’s not true. We do not even check that IEC stamp on the ID and we no longer stamp the ID if a person is registering,” said the provincial Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa spokesperson, Nditsheni Neswiswi.

Neswiswi said if a person has applied for registration, that person will appear on the voters roll and when their ID or Smart Card ID is scanned at the station before voting, the scanner will produce a sticker that indicates if a person is registered or not.

She said the sticker will also show the person’s number on the voters roll.
