The foundation is a community project that aims to address social issues and empowers young girls.

Patrons from as far as Phalaborwa and Polokwane walked 11kms at the hiking trail in support for the project.

Each year the project donates sanitary pads and cups to young girls in high schools around the Tzaneen area with the hope of keeping the girl child at school.

“A few years back I conducted research, which indicated that millions of girls in South Africa miss school during their periods, because they cannot afford to buy pads,” explained Makoma Maponya, Founder of Tzaneen Teach a Girl Foundation.

The hike raised R 4 000 in cash while some volunteers donated sanitary pads.

Currently, 420 packs have been donated in the past two weeks and their goal is 5 000 packs of sanitary pads to donate to various schools by July.

“The support from individuals has been incredible as we had 26 hikers at the event but if we want to reach our goal, we need local businesses to join the movement,” added Maponya.

The hike as usual was led by adventurer, Nyiko Masango, and they are planning two more hikes before the handing over during Mandela month.
