Seventy-eight workers who were contracted by Molebogeng, a company retained on a 36 month contract by the government to clean the streets of Tzaneen, participated in a peaceful demonstration after the company’s contract expired and a new contractor was appointed.

Although it is perceived that the (GTM) is responsible for employing these workers, this is not the case.

Every three years a contract to clean the streets, the bus stop and illegal dumping areas goes out on tender from the Department of Public Works.

After completion of the tender process, the department then appoints a contractor and the Expanded Public Works Program (EPWP) kicks in. The (EPWP), a nationwide initiative to address unemployment was implemented by the Department of Public Works. It is specifically aimed at unemployed woman, disabled people and unskilled, unemployed individuals.

The newly appointed contractor Thuwedi has not employed workers employed by the previous contractor and to the HERALD’S understanding, this was the reason for the protest. The downhearted staff previously employed by Molebogeng now demand that they be employed by the GTM.
