#MothersDay: ‘The business world is slow, but half a loaf is better than nothing’

A mother of two sets out to break the norms behind generating an income by looking into other ways of bringing in money. Amanda Mgimeti (34) says that her journey to selling stylish, classy and trendy shades started in 2017.

Mgimeti, born and raised in Burgersdorp Village, south east of Tzaneen, says that she decided to embark on this journey simply because earning a salary is not enough.

“I mean the business world is slow, but half a loaf is better than nothing,” stated Mgimeti.

She told the Letaba Herald that despite the fact that branching out makes for great business opportunities, it’s the fact that she can bring style in a trendy way to people in Tzaneen.

Currently, she is running her business online, where everyone can order the shades and she delivers them to the customers. Another option for delivery, depending on distance, is through meeting with the buyer and giving them their order(s).

Her shades range from R150 to R300 and they are not gender specific as they are fit for everyone. Amanda says that since she started her side hustle, the support she has received has been overwhelming as she did not imagine it to have such an audience because it is fairly recent. She also stated that she has an efficient supplier, which makes her deliveries quick and accessible within days.

When asked what challenges she has faced, she told the HERALD that when she started her business she had problems with people paying, which in turn sank her business for a short while.

Due to her business growing and reaching a wider audience, she plans on opening a shop for walk-in customers in Tzaneen. Mgimeti says that she is also planning on running a Mother’s Day special on her shades.

Anyone who would like to order the shades can get in touch with Amanda on her Instagram page: @tzaneensunglassboutique and on Facebook at: Tzaneen Sunglass Boutique.
