Phalaborwa high school learners get computer skills for free

Recently, 150 Gr12 learners were awarded computer certificates by the ‘Can’t into Can Foundation’.

The learners were from four high schools, Baranuka, Majeje, Ntshuxeko and Nkateko, around Phalaborwa. The organisation was started by two youngsters, Nhlanhla Mohale and Given Smango, in January last year. “The idea came after seeing a need to empower the youth in our neighbourhood in terms of education. “We started by offering computer learning for free to anyone who wanted to learn the basics of computers.

After the final exams, we focused on the Grade 12 learners, because we wanted to prepare them for tertiary education. “It is hard being a first-year student without any computer skills and that can affect your performance,” explained Mohale. Koketso Mathebula from Baranuka High School told the Herald that the programme enhanced her computer skills allowing her to draft her application letters.

Another student, Tsundzukani Makukule, said she wished they could have continued beyond the two weeks because she is now better equipped for university. Mohale stated that they used three of their own computers per school and needed more computers, a projector and funding to further their programme.
