Hoedspruit healthcare boost as new private hospital opens

Hoedspruit Private Hospital opens, offering advanced care to 120 000 residents and tourists in Limpopo.

LIMPOPO – Saturday marked a significant milestone for Hoedspruit as a six-year endeavour to open a private hospital in the town became a reality.

Dignitaries from the Maruleng Local Municipality (MLM), Ba-Phalaborwa Local Municipality, Limpopo Department of Health, and the Limpopo Office of the Premier, along with shareholders, medical professionals, and guests, attended the opening ceremony.

MLM Mayor Tseko Musolwa delivered the welcome remarks. Mopani District Municipality Mayor Pule Shai, Dr Pieter Scholtz, a director on the Hoedspruit Private Hospital board, and the Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego addressed the attendees and remarked on the occasion.

The 72-bed, state-of-the-art hospital includes a maternity ward and a neonatal intensive care unit and will serve the surrounding communities, and residents of Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa, as well as international tourists.

Close to 120 000 people in an estimated 30 000 households are set to benefit from the hospital’s services.

According to Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba, this number is projected to rise significantly by 2039, highlighting the growing demand for quality healthcare in the province.

“This moment represents a significant milestone not only for our healthcare system but also for the people who will benefit from the advanced care and support offered here. This facility, in the main, brings with it state-of-the-art technology, dedicated expertise, and a commitment to improving the well-being of our citizens,” said Ramathuba.

“For many years, the growing population in Hoedspruit and its surrounding rural areas felt the absence of an adequate medical facility. The need for accessible healthcare became increasingly evident as both local community members and international tourists found themselves travelling long distances for medical care. Today, we celebrate the fulfilment of that need,” Ramathuba said.

“The journey began when visionaries like Dr Scholtz, Jaco Leicester, and Carien Taute recognised the urgent requirement for a private healthcare facility in Hoedspruit. Their dedication and hard work led to the acquisition of two hectares of land, which has now transformed into this remarkable hospital,” Ramathuba added.
