Xitsonga Literary Awards 2025 launched
The Xitsonga Literary Awards celebrate Xitsonga authors and poets, promoting local literature and addressing industry challenges.
LIMPOPO – The Xitsonga Literary Awards were officially launched at the Xilumani Hotel in Giyani, aiming to honour and celebrate Xitsonga authors and poets.
Founded by Allex Mhangani, the awards spotlight literary talent and encourage the growth of Xitsonga literature.
This year’s ceremony will take place later in 2025.
Radio personality Ike Ngobeni hosted the launch as MC, entertaining guests alongside poet and former Miss Indoni, N’wa Mbhuri, who captivated the audience with her recitations.
Esteemed authors Dr Freddy Rikhotso and Dr Hasani Makhubele attended as guest speakers, sharing valuable insights and advice with aspiring writers.
Jubilee Rivombo, a previous award winner, expressed her gratitude. “It’s an honour to be recognised for my contribution to Xitsonga literature.”
Mhangani told the Herald he was delighted at the presence of notable guests, including Prof Thembhani Babane from the University of Venda and Dr Paula Otukile from Botswana, author of Thato u navela ku va phaphatana.
However, Mhangani highlighted the financial challenges the initiative faces, appealing to businesses and institutions for support. “The idea to host such an event arose after realising the challenges authors face in marketing their books,” he explained.
He further emphasised the need to adapt to the digital age. “The publishing industry has evolved from hardcopy to digital. We aim to assist authors with the right channels and platforms to reach their audiences.”
Mhangani also collaborates with transcribers and translators to adapt books from English to Xitsonga, ensuring accessibility and fostering growth in local literature.
