Phalaborwa mayor helps top learner on university journey

Phalaborwa mayor helps top learner Revain Ngobeni secure funds for Rhodes University, ensuring her dream of studying pharmacy stays alive.

LIMPOPO – The Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Mayor Merriam Malatji and Ward 18 Cllr Tebogo Malatji have played a crucial role in securing a brighter future for a top-performing learner facing financial hardship.

Revain Ngobeni, a top-performing learner from Nondweni near Selwane village, earned an impressive five distinctions in her 2024 Gr 12 results.

However, her dream of studying for a Bachelor of Pharmacy at Rhodes University in Grahamstown was nearly derailed due to a lack of travel money.

Malatji recognised Ngobeni’s potential and determination, subsequently presenting her situation to the mayor. In response, the mayor swiftly arranged sponsorship from Laelo Construction and Projects, a local company, to cover Ngobeni’s travel expenses.

Ngobeni comes from a financially disadvantaged background with unemployed parents supporting four children through social grants.

Malatji praised Ngobeni’s hard work and highlighted the importance of supporting intelligent young people in the community.

“These learners are our future. By investing in their education, we are investing in the future of Ba-Phalaborwa,” she said.

She also encouraged local businesses to follow Laelo Construction and Projects’ example by assisting other high-achieving students from underprivileged backgrounds.
