Pensioners win trip to Kruger National Park

GGM hosts cultural event to empower elderly citizens through dance, song, and a beauty pageant, rewarding winners with a Kruger trip.

LIMPOPO – The Greater Giyani Municipality continues to restore the dignity of elderly citizens by providing them with essential support and resources for their programmes. This commitment was evident during a special event that celebrated and empowered senior citizens through various cultural and recreational activities.

The event, which took place at the Greater Giyani Multipurpose Centre on Friday, featured an older persons’ beauty pageant, a traditional dance showcase, and a singing competition. These activities not only entertained but also promoted social inclusion, cultural preservation, and the overall well-being of the elderly.

According to Cllr Christinah Zitha, who represented the Giyani mayor at the event, winners in each category would be taken to Kruger National Park on holiday. Zitha emphasised the importance of honouring and valuing senior citizens, recognising their contributions to society and ensuring they remain active and engaged in the community.

“As a municipality, we must support our senior citizens and promote their well-being by encouraging them to participate in sporting activities or any form of social engagement that allows them to stay active, interact with others, and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” explained Zitha.

She added that these activities not only enhance their physical health but also contribute to their mental and emotional well-being, which ultimately helps them to live longer and happier lives.

“In line with this commitment, we have decided to reward the winners of today’s event with a special trip to the Kruger National Park,” she said.

According to her, this excursion will allow them to spend a day in a peaceful and natural environment where they can relax, unwind, and momentarily escape from their daily struggles.

“Being surrounded by nature will not only bring them joy but will also serve as a therapeutic experience, helping to relieve stress and potentially alleviate some of the chronic illnesses associated with aging,” she explained, saying this was the municipality’s way of restoring the dignity of elderly citizens.

Meanwhile, participants expressed joy and appreciation for the initiative, highlighting how such events foster a sense of belonging and mutual respect among older residents. “To many of us, it is not necessarily about winning, but about a sense of belonging, getting together with fellow senior citizens and displaying our traditional culture,” said Hlengani Ngwenya, one of the participants who got position two in the male beauty pageant category.

The overall winner came from a beauty pageant, Mano Chavalala. She was also part of the Giyani team that won several categories at the event.
